Neurodiversity-Affirming Parent Coaching

“How can I best support my autistic child?”

This is a question most parents ask when their children receive an autism diagnosis. As an autistic adult and psychotherapist, it is my mission to help further insight into the needs and experience of autistic folks so they can have the understanding and support they need to thrive.

I offer coaching for parents and caregivers of autistic children who may be seeking support with some of the following areas:

-Anxiety

-Meltdowns (sometimes viewed as “tantrums”)

-Aggression

-Autistic social skills

-Supporting Special Interests

-Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA) / Persistent Drive for Autonomy

-Sensory Needs

-Building Positive Autistic Identity

-Meeting kids where they are

-Autistic Play

-Understanding Autistic Communication

-Dysregulation

-”Behavior Problems” and meeting the underlying need

I do not provide Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA), Parent Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT), Positive Parenting Program (Triple P) or any other form of behaviorism.

When we meet the underlying need, behavior tends to change in a sustainable way.

“Behavior is communication.”

When an autistic child is becoming dysregulated, at the root is usually some kind of distress or discomfort. As an alternative to “behavior management,” we can work together to identify the need, distress or discomfort underlying the behaviors, to provide authentic understanding and support.
